Ethan’s class has been doing these timed math tests. It is 10 problems completed in 20 seconds. They started with addition all +1, then +2, and so on. She has them make up flash cards to study each level. When they complete one test they get a gumball. E got through addition and subtraction quickly, then started multiplication. His teacher told the class that she had never had a student get past x6’s. I thought this would be a good test on how Ethan would approach. I was really intrigued to see if he would take that as well if I don’t pass x6, no big deal it is hard and no one has ever done it yet. Or would he think it as the ultimate challenge to complete it. I was really hoping it would challenge him and he would want to excel at the math tests.
He was passing some and then getting stuck on x4, x5, x6 taking 2-3 days to pass those. They only take the test once a day. There was another boy in his class that was pretty even with him, ‘T’. Ethan got to x6 a day before T, but he didn’t pass it. I think it took him 3 tries but he passed x6!! I think it was the same day as T. I could tell I kept keeping track of the other kid, wish I wasn’t doing that! I was SO proud of Ethan!
He kept plugging on thru the 7,8, 9 – which took a couple of tries until he finished all of multiplication!
He was the first one ever to finish all of multiplication! So proud.
She didn’t have any flash cards for the division, so had to make those up special for him, along with the tests!
His teacher said that if you get through all the levels you get a gumball machine. Ethan passed all of division last week and he said he will get a special certificate at the award day. I wish I could see him get it! So proud of my boy! I love that he wanted to succeed, love that the most.
