We went to baby Scarlett’s christening party on Sat. Ethan was most excited about the water slide that was going to be there.
He loved this slide..it was so fun, and at first it was just him and 3 other little kids.
He probably went down it at least 20 times.
It was in their backyard on a steep hill, T and I went up to the house to get another drink, but there was another mom down still at the slide. We walk out of the house and hear E screaming! He was grabbing his ankle. We hurried down there, but I knew T would be handling anything that was wrong with him. When stepping out of the slide he slipped on the wet grass and majorly twisted his ankle. The other mom said she saw it happen and knew it was gonna hurt him bad. We got it iced, and then the swelling happened. Dave came down and checked on it, too. He suggested getting an x-ray, fearing it was broken. Ethan asked if an x-ray would hurt. We had to explain that it was just a picture to see if it was broken, which then he started to cry again when I mentioned crutches.
He couldn’t even stand up, I could tell he was too afraid to even try to walk. T had to carry him on that steep hill to the car and we headed to urgent care. We got there at 5 min to closing, but grabbed a wheel chair and got him in. They gave him a sucker on the way to get the x-ray, which was good to calm him. He just stayed in the wheel chair the whole time. The dr said that one of the x-rays looked like it could be a fracture, the growth plate looked slightly shifted, but then she explained that that is common with their age though, also. T said that they would probably put a temporary cast on it and then say to follow up with orthopedic doctor. Well, that is exactly what happened!
As he was getting wrapped he started to wimper some and the nurses were wondering what thinking he was in pain. I figured it out when I saw one of them had just brought in the crutches. I guess he thought he could walk on it once it was in the cast. Or he thought we were taking that wheelchair home? Poor kid. He had a super quick tutorial on the crutches, as they were closing. He was so scared. T ended up just carrying him to the car.
When we got home I was trying to get him to use the crutches, but just getting thru the kitchen was tough for him. We let him rest with the elevated foot in our bedroom and watch tv. After awhile I heard him hopping to the bathroom.
We were so lucky that T knows a local doctor that helps at the school, he had called him almost immediately after it happened. T knew that Tim could access the x-rays online, so he could check them at home. It was such a relief to get another opinion from Tim. Dr Tim called him back and T put him on speaker and told Ethan that he didn’t think it was broken and that he could take off the cast and ice it some more. Praise the Lord, it is not broken. Praise the Lord that he wouldn’t need to use both of the crutches.
We were so worried about how he would do at school. We emailed his teacher, gym teacher, nurse, and principal to alert them. He took just one crutch in to help with his limping, T said he shouldn’t be putting so much weight on it. He will be sitting out of gym this week and prob next. The nurse told him that he should stay on the blacktop at recess, to which he started tearing up and asking he can’t go on the grass?? Aww, poor guy.
So when he came home on Monday, he unwrapped it so we could ice it up. Now that morning it was bruising up some, was purple in some areas but that night it was crazy gross purple and red bruising.
Dr Tim was going to be at the hs that night so we went in so he could check him out in person. E was doing great just limping along without the crutch. Dr Tim looked and said he didn’t think it was broken but still have him take it easy and not do running or gym class.
Ethan is not having a good August. Or he is becoming accident prone.
The first week of August he went golfing with T, his Uncle D & his Poppy. He was riding with his uncle and fell out of the golf cart! I guess there were a couple of quick turns and he was sliding and then fell back on the path. He landed on his side and hit his head. I freaked out when T called and told me what happened and said he thought he had a concussion.
When they got home he was still crying, because his mommy really is the only one that can calm him down in these cases. He ended up fine with some tylenol. He had some scrapes on his back. His uncle D felt horrible. It was an accident, but he really felt bad about it. He was just trying to be the fun uncle. I think he thought that E is bigger now and could handle it and hang out, not his fault he just isn’t around little kids.
So Ethan will be fine, thank goodness! He didn’t even take the crutch to school today and he is hardly limping.
