E was complaining a little of a headache on Wed night and then said he throat kind of hurt. I had just said earlier that day that Ethan had never ever said he had a sore throat. I almost thought that he didn’t know what that would be. My coworker said her son might have strep throat and was taking him in to the doctor later that day and then she was going to be tested, too. We had gone out to eat to Ponderosa and when we got home he had said his head and throat hurt. I remember helping him study for his social studies test the next day and he was fine.
Then the next morning he said he his head was bothering him and T took his temperature and he had a fever. So, he stayed home from school. Trent was saying that strep throat is going around town and our niece had it last week. I really didn’t think he had it, he didn’t have much of a fever. I left work at 2pm to come home for him so T could go to work. We took his temp at 2:30 and it was 101! We gave him more chewable aspirin and it went down a little. He was acting normal, not moping around like a sickie. He was playing on his laptop.
I went to his school to pick up his homework from Thursday, one of the secretaries is our neighbor so she asked about him. I said he still has a fever so started up another round of medicine. The other lady chimed in saying, of so he will be out tomorrow then? I said I’d wait to see how he was feeling in the morning, and after hearing me say he still had a fever at 2:30, she kind of wrinkles her nose and says “they have to be fever free without medicine for 24 hours prior to coming back to school.” I guess I never realized that!! He has never missed more than 1 day of school per year! Poor kid.
So he stayed home on Friday, Thursday night his temp was 103 once! It was amazing how hot he kept getting!
Trent took him to the doctor on Friday and it was confirmed that he had STREP THROAT. They gave him 4 of the chewable medicines while at their office. I had only been giving him 2, so upped those to 3. He got an antibiotic and T had them flavor it with blueberry. Ethan absolutely hated it! There were tears. It was only 6ml in a tiny cup, it is a very small amount. He would drink it in 4 tiny sips and chased it with juice after each sip! It was crazy how long it took him to take it. I did have flashbacks to my childhood not liking the cherry cough medicine, but wasn’t allowed to chase it with anything.
Saturday Jan 28 - he was still running a fever and it was still 101-102, so I made him a cherry slushie. It made him happy.
Sunday Jan 29 – still running a fever! He had a fever still at 3pm. When he went to bed he finally felt cool. It was amazing, after touching his head and feeling that heat for so long, that night he was actually cool not warm to me!
Monday Jan 30 – no temp in the morning, but we kept him home one more day, since the whole 24 hr prior -he did have a fever. I picked up the 2nd bottle of his medicine and asked for no flavoring. He said it was a little better tasting. Eventually, he did swallow it all at once. But still chased it with juice.
Poor Ethan. I was afraid to bring up that he won’t be in the perfect attendance group picture in the yearbook now…I know he will be bummed.
